The Family Support Network (FSN) at Texas A&M University is a resource center for families in the Brazos Valley who have children with disabilities. Dr. Amy Sharp, director of the FSN, can be reached at 979.845.4612 or sharp@tamu.edu.
History
Founded in 2002, the FSN is a project of the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and was developed following the model of Parents of Children with Special Needs, a grassroots group that had been holding meetings since 1999 to strengthen knowledge and communication
among parents, professionals and educators in the area.
What We Do
We serve families who have children with disabilities as they seek the information, support and skills needed to make informed decisions, especially those dealing with special education for their kids. Each FSN member receives a monthly newsletter packed with a calendar of community events, articles and announcements.
Guided by the input of a collaborative team consisting of family members, educators and professionals, the FSN directs families to area agencies and services, as well as to resources on specific topics of interest.
Probably the most popular FSN event is Camp LIFE (Leadership, Independence, and Friends through Experiences), an accessible, overnight camping adventure for kids with disabilities and their siblings, held bi-annually in spring and fall.
Membership
There is no charge for membership, we just encourage families to get involved--get on our mailing list, ask us questions. We're here for you! Nearly all events and services are absolutely free. We look forward to connecting you to helpful information and a supportive community!
